Grupo Caliente President and former Mayor of Tijuana, Jorge Hank Rhon, recently announced his candidacy for the upcoming Governor of Baja California election. A prominent figure in Mexican politics, Hank Rhon, will be running as a member of the Christian-oriented, social conservative Partido Encuentro Solidario Party. For over 30 years, Jorge Hank Rhon has been an active member of the Tijuana community, serving as mayor of Tijuana from 2004 to 2007, and has worked to improve employment, security, and infrastructure in the area. Current Candidate for Governor of Baja California
In mid-January, Jorge Hank Rhon registered as a candidate for governor of Baja California. While Jorge Hank Rhon has in the past ran as a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, Hank Rhon’s press secretary Martina Martinez reported that he would be running in 2021 with the socially conservative political party, Partido Encuentro Solidario, or PESBC. On January 26th, Jorge Hank Rhon held a press conference at his Pueblo Amigo hotel in Tijuana and where he announced his candidacy for the 2021 election.
Jorge Hank Rhon’s Political Career
In 2004, Jorge Hank Rhon ran a successful campaign against PAN candidate Jorge Ramos for mayor of Tijuana. Jorge Hank Rhon’s victory ended the 15 years of PAN, Partido Accion Nacional) political party. Jorge Hank Rhon served as mayor of Tijuana from December 2004 to February 2007, during which time he made substantial improvements to Tijuana’s infrastructure. The Hank administration most notably approved a 45 million pesos investment to create the Alba Roja intersection and made technological and security improvements to reduce the number of kidnappings within Tijuana.
The Mexican gubernatorial elections are scheduled for June 6th, 2021. Governors will be elected for Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Nayarit, Nuevo, and a number of other states. This will be the second to last Baja California election before the position reverts to a six-year term. Other candidates for the 2021 Governor of Baja California include former Miss Universe Lupita Jones and current Municipal President of Mexicali Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda.
